Early Life, Family & Education
On July 19, 1971, Vitali Klitschko was born to his parents in Belovodskoe, Kyrgyzstan. His father worked as a major general in Soviet Air Force and served as a military attache in East Germany. His father, like several other Soviet commanders, was assigned the work at the site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. His father soon developed cancer after working at the site.
Vitali is the brother of the famous professional fighter Wladimir Klitschko. He used to work as a toolmaker at the Kyiv Automation Plant to pay his bills. He became a professional boxer in 1996. That same year he also completed his graduation from the Pereyaslav-Khmelnytsky Pedagogical Institute. He earned his Ph.D. in 2000 in Sports Science.
Vitali Klitschko became a professional boxer in 1996, and he began taking an active involvement in the politics of Ukraine in 2005. His professional boxing career and political interests co-existed until he retired from professional boxing in 2013.
Vitali won several world heavyweight championships in his career as a professional boxer. He won the World Boxing Organization (WBO) title in 1999, the Ring magazine title in 2004, and the World Boxing Title (WBC) two times between the years 2004 and 2013. While competing in world heavyweight title fights, he has defeated a total of 15 opponents.
Vitali revealed his retirement plans from professional boxing in December 2013, he was 42 years old at the time. He played his last boxing fight in 2012. He is the founder of the political party Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform (UDAR). He founded his own political party in 2010.
Vitali Klitschko loves playing chess, and he is a friend of Vladimir Kramnik, a former world chess champion. The two have even played chess many times and, perhaps, unsurprisingly Kramnik has won every time. Interestingly, Vitali has never fought with his fellow professional boxer brother because their mother made them promise not to do that.
