Early Life, Family & Education

In September 1954, Lanier was born in the United States of America. To be specific, the birthplace of Lanier is Lynchburg, Virginia. His mother worked as a caretaker in a hospital while his father was a draftsman.

In 1976, Lanier married a woman named Pam. The couple welcomed two children- daughter Brandie in 1980 and son Glen in 1987. Their son shared his name with one of Lanier’s younger brothers, who was killed in a motorcycle accident at the age of 16.

The couple separated in the mid-’80s. The decision was made to evade the authorities investigating Lanier’s illegal business. Lanier started an affair in 1986 with another woman named Maria De La Luz Maggi. They soon married.

Maggi was later charged with money laundering in 1993, and the couple divorced. In 2014, Lanier was freed from jail. Afterward, he moved in with his ex-wife Pam. There were in talks of their remarrying.  

Career

Initially, Lanier used to work at construction sites to earn his living. His career as a professional car driver began in the year 1978. That year, he participated in a meeting of the Sports Car Club of America. The meeting took place in Miami Beach Convention Center and focused on breaking into motorsport.

Lanier soon purchased a 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster and started participating in E Production at the SCCA Southeast Regional Championship. In 1984, he formed his own team with the crew chief Keith Leyton and Bill Whittington. He named his team Blue Thunder Racing.

In 2021, Netflix made a documentary about Lanier called Need For Weed. It is revealed in the documentary that he serves as a brand ambassador for a medical marijuana company. The company still sponsors Lanier in motorsports races.
