Early Life, Family & Education
On June 30, 1985, Michael Phelps was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the US to his parents. The names of his parents are Deborah and Michael Fred Phelps. His mother served as the principal of a middle school and his father was a member of the Maryland State Police department. He has two sisters whose names are Whitney and Hilary Phelps.
Michael’s parents separated in 1994, and his father married another woman in 2000. Michael attended Towson High School and graduated from there in the year 2003. He also received training from Coach Bob Bowman at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club.
Career
In 2000, Michael Phelps started his professional swimming career by taking part in the Summer Olympics. He ranked at the fifth position while swimming 200 m butterfly. Next year, he participated in the 2001 World Championships and won a gold medal in the 200m butterfly. In 2002, he competed in the Pan Pacific Championships and won 3 gold and 2 silver medals. While competing in the 2003 World Championships, he won 4 gold and several silver medals.
Phelps performance went on getting even more spectacular. While competing at the 2004 Summer Olympics, he won 6 gold and 2 bronze medals. At the 2007 and 2008 World Championships, he respectively won seven and eight gold medals. He went on winning gold medals and breaking world records until he decided to retire in 2012.
Phelps made a comeback to professional swimming in 2014. He competed at the 2014 Pan Specific Championships and won 3 gold and 2 silver medals. In 2016, he won 5 gold and 1 silver medal while competing at that year’s Summer Olympics. He decided to take a permanent retirement after that. He launched Michael Phelps Foundation to promote the swimming sport healthier lifestyle.
